Sprinkler protection for Children’s Home
Skegness, Lincolnshire: DCHC – Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre – is a registered charity which provides Derbyshire children experiencing difficult times at home with a week-long holiday in Skegness, Lincolnshire. Nationwide Fire Sprinklers were the first choice for the retro fit installation of an active suppression system.
Following the tragic events at Grenfell Tower in June 2017, the risk and threat of fire within a residential building became brutally apparent. DCHC recognized that it would be the safest option to fit a sprinkler system in the multiple bedroom property on Scarborough Avenue, Skegness, which provides 660 holiday places every year for children who experience difficult times at home. Running between April and October every year, the week-long break helps the children build their self-worth and self-confidence, along with their ability to communicate in groups with their peers; all in a relaxed, secure and supportive environment. At the same time, it offers some welcome respite for parents, guardians and carers alike.
Bill Tomlinson, Chairman of DCHC said everyone at the charity held a “deep indebtedness to Derbyshire Fire & Rescue and all involved for making this system available for the protection of Derbyshire Children; to Derby Homes for their Project Management, plumbing & electrical services and, of course, to Nationwide Fire Sprinklers for the efficient delivery and installation of the system”.
He added: “Families in the community will be reassured to learn of the generosity given by those organisations, generosity which will now greatly benefit their children’s safety; and who gain so much more from the holidays DCHC provide to them.”
With financial help and support from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service the charity were able to employ the skills of bespoke fire safety system experts, Nationwide Fire Sprinklers to ensure that the holiday home was thoroughly protected against the threat of fire. Recognising the valuable work done by the charity, Nationwide Fire Sprinklers along with Xylem (water pump suppliers) and Reliable (pipework and sprinkler head supplier) provided essential materials free of charge, ensuring that the project was able to proceed.
With over 20 years’ experience of working in the fire suppression industry, Nationwide Fire Sprinklers have designed and installed a wide variety of bespoke projects. Ranging from Grade I Listed properties, Ministry of Defence contracts, tower blocks, care homes and have even featured on Channel 4’s Grand Designs.
Keith Rhodes, Managing Director, said, “When we were approached by Derby Homes to be involved in the project it was morally the right thing to do. DCHC do such great work for the children of Derbyshire it was a pleasure to offer our help and free materials. Sprinklers provide a high level of protection and complete peace of mind for those lucky enough to stay at the Holiday Centre.”
