Today at around 3.45 pm at Express Shop Equipment premises in Catton road
Arnold Nottingham a dust extraction unit in the joinery workshop caught
fire.

Notts fire and rescue attended with two appliances.

Nationwide fire were called out to shut off the sprinkler installation (as
no one on site knew how to do this).

Crew manager Zac Goodspeed told Keith Rhodes that upon arrival they found 1
sprinkler head above the unit had been set off and had prevented the fire
from spreading to other plant and materials, but the unit was on fire
internally and had badly smoke logged the workshop.

They deployed 1 hose and 1 jet to extinguish the fire.

Owner Paul Jeffries told us that he didn't realise the sprinkler system was
live, but that it had saved his premises.

His main concern was now fulfilling customer orders.

The sprinkler system is very old and has not been maintained for more than
15 years. It runs off the town main but has no means of isolation. The
activation has caused some fractures in pipework which the owners seem now
willing to deal with and reinstate the whole system.
