Fire Sprinklers in Wales

On 1st January 2016, Wales made history by becoming the first country in the world to introduce legislation for the mandatory installation of fire sprinklers in all new homes.

Fast forward to October 2018 and Nationwide Fire Sprinklers is proud to announce the opening of their Wales branch, allowing us to serve our Welsh customers with a dedicated and local team. From highly experienced and certified designers, installers and customer service to the peace of mind that using a 3rd party accredited company keeps you safe in the knowledge you’re in expert hands.

The Wales Scenario

The Welsh Government had amended Approved Document B volumes 1 and 2, with new regulations and guidance. The amendments to the documents arise from the Domestic Fire Safety (Wales) Regulations, resulting in a new Section 7A ‘Automatic Fire Suppression Systems’ in the Building Regulations 2010 Statutory Instrument. Section 7A introduces regulations 37A and 37B, requiring all new ‘domestic premises’ to have a fire suppression system installed. A fire suppression system is defined as an automatic system that controls and extinguishes fires without human intervention – most commonly we see the use of fire sprinkler systems, but water mist is also another option.

Does my building need fire sprinklers?

The requirements apply throughout Wales and apply to new build and change of use applications cover –

  • New houses and flats
  • Care homes
  • Rooms for residential purposes (other than in a hotel, hospital, prison or short stay leisure hostel)
  • Registered group homes and sheltered housing

If your project falls under one of these then, don’t delay – getting our expert design team at the earliest stages can help with project efficiencies and save money.

*National Fire Sprinkler Network Report 2017

Llywodraeth Cymru have produced a very helpful document which will help explain aspects of fire sprinkler systems, covers some of the legislation and addresses many of the common myths. Please be aware, this is external content and Nationwide Fire Sprinklers is not responsible for the content. Also, this document was created by the Welsh Government as an advisory guide and has no statutory status. LABC (Local Authority Building Control) have kindly provided in-depth information as well as links to the Wales Approved Document Part B: Fire Safety An extract from their website – This section deals with all things relating to fire safety, including means of escape, fire spread, structural fire protection and fire service access. The approved document to satisfy the requirements can be downloaded below, with Approved Document B Volume 1 (Wales) covering dwellings and Volume 2 covering buildings other than dwellings (including flats). As our name suggests we work all over the UK and long before the introduction of the Welsh legislation had been working to provide our expertise in Wales; installing a wide range of projects from care homes to new builds, retrofits to sheltered housing. Our experience allows us to offer the highest trained staff and the introduction of a new dedicated Wales team brings us closer. This means we can now offer a very competitive cost and a personal service to all our Welsh customers, with a next day service.
With over 18 years’ experience of working within the fire sprinkler industry, being proud members of BAFSA and also third-party certified by FIRAS, you can be sure that you will be getting the highest standard of knowledge into your project. We’ve installed into every type of property and situation, worked to tight budgets and challenging deadlines. We pride ourselves on our quality and we’re as happy working with you on your single room protection project as we are working on a major retrofit or new build scheme.

Unlike some less reputable installers, here at Nationwide Fire Sprinklers, all our fire sprinkler systems are installed to BS9251:2021 and are certified as such once fully tested and commissioned. We ensure that any new or existing products are thoroughly certified before we consider installing them. The advent of the new BS8458:2015 Water Mist standard has seen a raft of new products which proclaimed to be fully compliant, however we would always recommend that thorough checks are undertaken prior to placing an order. Ensure that all products used by your installer adhere to the relevant standards and are fully compliant. If in doubt, contact us today for free advice.

“Very thorough”

We just wanted to pass on that we were very pleased with Dylans visit on Tuesday. He was very thorough in all the checks  and also got to the bottom of a knocking noise that we have been having that has never seemed to get sorted before.

Thanks.
Best regards

Polite, Informative and Tidy

Great at communicating

On another note would just like to give some positive feedback about the team that come down here.

The guys are professional and have been great at communicating with us on site.

From a site perspective, having labour on site which is knowledgeable and, willing to explain from their perspective what and why has been exceedingly useful to myself as part of a site team.

They have also been very good at doing the same with our site electrician and plumber, which has made the sequencing and finishing of works far smoother.

If you could please pass on my gratitude to them.
